The Summer House Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 254 ratings

A no-nonsense small-town veterinarian and an aristocratic playboy from London have nothing in common—except an undeniable attraction that could change everything.

Connor knows better than to fall for men like Ashby Sterling-Haynes. The last time he trusted a wealthy, entitled heartbreaker, he had nothing but regret. So when the youngest son of an English lord arrives in town—charming, gorgeous, and clearly trouble—Connor is determined to keep his distance. Ash is precisely the kind of man he swore never to trust again. Too bad his heart doesn’t get the message.

Ash never planned on hiding out in the Cotswolds, but a single reckless decision has left him with few options. What he didn't expect was to find Connor—the gruff, stubborn vet who challenges him at every turn. What starts as a game—a bit of harmless flirting to pass the time—quickly turns into something real. And for the first time, Ash wonders if he’s finally found a reason to stop running.

But secrets have a way of surfacing, and with their pasts casting long shadows, love might not be enough to bridge the gap between them.

A rape is an awful thing and you never know what it may do with you and your mind. Connor has been hurt badly by his then-lover and his friends. Despite the professional help he has received, he is still affected, still getting flashbacks and is still having signs of PTSD. He is now vet in a rural area, close to his summer paradise of his childhood. He is fairly content with his live, except he would like very much to have someone special in his life. Connor is actually very lonely. Both his parents are gone and he was the only child. No other relative is mentioned. His assistant in the veterinarian practice is the closest person, although he is on friendly terms with his costumers.

Ash is the youngest of three brothers in a family with a title. But unlike his brothers who knew what they wanted to become early on, he has just followed the flow. He is working as an accountant in the family firm. And he has done something he fears will end badly – he has put his trust into a firm in trouble, believing in its potential.

Those two unlikely men meet for the first time in a wedding. Connor is sceptical and prejudiced, because Ash comes from similar background as his abuser, but he could not be more wrong. Ash is not an exploiter as Tristan has been. He contributes in his family’s business, he is caring – and not least, he is out.

Patience is the word here. The will to understand and accept is strong. Connor opens up and lets himself be loved. The Fate shoves him gently the right way when the owner of the house where Connor has spent his summer holidays, offers him the house for an affordable sum. This in addition to an offer from his boss for a partnership and Connor can put down his roots.

But there is a change in the cards for both of them. Ash (at last) admits to himself that living in the city and pushing papers is not “him”. He wants to feel the wood in his hands. He wants to create. Fortunately his family is supportive.

Really a nice story happening during summer months in the middle of Cotswolds, in my mind perhaps the most romantic area in England. I do recommend reading it.

I was drawn to this story for many reasons. The wonderful author, the Cotswold setting, a veterinarian main character, and yes - the gorgeous cover featuring an impishly intriguing dark haired man... This was a lovely, but by no means, fluffy read. The MCs both had some serious issues to work through. A heartwarming - and at times heartwrenching - story of two men who were willing and able to look beneath the surface, to discover and hold each other's hearts.

Connor and Ash seemed like opposites at first, but were more alike in their vulnerabilities than either might have expected. I liked them both right away. Their story grabbed me by the heart and wouldn't let me go. The journey that brought them together took time. Took a summer. Secrets and dreams were shared, preconceptions were worn away, trust was built. New life was breathed into them as new life was breathed into a crumbling cottage from Connor's boyhood. Some of the revelations were tough. Both men dealt with the other with patience and understanding - and the support of family and friends. I really appreciated that neither Connor or Ash felt cliched - Connor, the self made veterinarian, was hurting from his past yet was still able to be attracted to and want another man. He was able to decide to put down roots and not run away. Ash, the seemingly posh, wealthy heir, was one to have hook ups rather than relationships, yet he was no heartless player... far from it. I loved getting to know these men and seeing them fall in love. The charming historic village setting was beautifully brought to life as a key thread running throught the hearts and souls of all the characters.

Looking forward to more books in this series.

Great! Wonderful! Splendid! It is simply an excellent story to read. At first the tension between Ashby and Connor was a bit strange. But as things developed, they came to respect and like and then love each other, despite their own past and personal issues. I particularly liked the relationship among the three brothers (Ashby is the baby of three), how they supported each other and were tight brothers. Landon's relationship with Rachel was a lot of fun!! And I also appreciated Rachel's friendship with Connor -- one couldn't ask for a better friend! The part about the death of the dog, followed closely by Mick's passing, had me all teared up on the subway! Yes, on the freaking subway! I sensed that there is a sequel coming soon!! Really looking forward to that! Great great great story! First rate writing! I felt I was right there in that lovely English town during that summer!

I do like most of RJ Scotts books and I did like this one. I am giving 3 stars only because of how long you have to wait to find out what is Connor's problem. I think that if the author had put what happen to him at the start of the book, we would have understood why he hated Ashby and his family. But overall I enjoyed it.

This subtle love story starts out in a quiet subdued ,but then begins to surprise you with the depth of pain and of healing that unfolds in such an amazing and gentle way.
Healing both Connor and Ash through their deepening vulnerability with one another.
A powerful and rich story ,thank you !!!

    2.0 out of 5 stars 2
Reviewed in Japan on October 6, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read.

The love in this book develops beautifully over a summer in the English countryside. Connor and Ash both so likeable for different reasons. The secondary characters are also so important to the enjoyment of this book. The chapter towards the end with Mick really resonated with me and now (the next day) I'm still weepy. I hope we keep in contact with these characters in future books, but I'm sure with RJ Scott writing them we'll have a wonderful time reading them.

This book is definitely one worth reading! I don't understand why I'm writing the first review. I took a chance in buying it, and I'm so glad I did. Individually, Ash and Connor have issues relating to family and traumatic experiences. Together, they become a happily ever after, and the relationship we see develop is one we would wish for our best friends. The story reminds me of the first book in the Red Dirt Heart series by N. R. Walker, another one I'd highly recommend. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in Scott's series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet English read

I like R.J. Scotts books, I find them refreshing and very easy to read.

The Summer house is a nice slow burn romance, set in England, which I love. Ash is a lovable character from the start. Youngest child of a very well to do family, he is very down to earth even though he has a huge trust fund.
Connor is harder to like, he has barriers up that feel unbreakable in the beginning. A village vet, that has had a lot of heart break and hurt in his past. Ash slowly breaks down his walls and earns his trust.

I enjoyed everything about this book, it has a sweet storyline. Love creeps up quickly in their summer romance.
The ending for me was perfect in every way.
