About the Author
Nishio's works often cover themes of youth, but are framed in genres that are familiar to the masses. His works tend to mix mystery with comedy and touches or romance and/or the supernatural. He is a modern author in every sense, sometimes even experimenting with the Japanese language itself. Many of his works have been adapted into animated television series and films. His best known works are the Monogatari series and Katanagatari.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2019I went in thinking this was an edgy modern retelling of classic mystery novel "And Then There Were None" with anime tropes and pop culture references.
Hoo-boy was I wrong. The narrative is brilliantly dark, and the characters are all very well fleshed out and three-dimensional. The plot twist left me awestruck, it’s no wonder this book won the Mephisto Award, as I highly doubt anyone would have seen that resolution coming!
For a light novel enthusiast Zaregoto is such a refreshing read and I recommend it to all fans of mystery / detective fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2017This was another fantastic novel from Nisioisin. This is the first book in a long time that kept me reading until the early hours of the morning because I was so hooked on the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2017It's NISIOISIN. Not really much else needs to be said about this. Great writing, despite not being done yet. Always a treat to be able to get a new NISIO book. Having the character that not really a whole lot of other authors tend to have for their books nowadays.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2017A really good mystery novel by a great Japanese writer. The translation for this book is done pretty well. Nisioisin is notorious for is puns and portmanteaus in Japanese, which don't always translate well to English. I was able to pick out several instances of where the translator had to take creative liberty with the original text, but they weren't jarring or out-of-place, which is refreshing compared to some other translations out there. The characters are all fun and quirky and there is plenty of personality to go around. The locked room mysteries are well laid-out and the resolutions are satisfying. It's also quite long so it's a lot of book for the money, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2021If you're a fan of Nisioisin's Monogatari series I recommend giving this a try, even if you aren't the characters are exceptional, and the mystery is very entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017Zaregoto is my favorite novel series, and with this doing (hopefully) successful we can see the other novels become officially translated as well. Maybe even Ningen and Saikyou??
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019is a great novel, is so controversial and mysterious
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2023This was a really good mystery, however I wouldn't say that this book touches on the author's best. It wasn't as well written as the "Monogatari" series was for instance. That aside it was still a good read and I'm reading the next title in this series already.

5.0 out of 5 stars du grand NISIOISIN
Bon soyons clair, pour peu que vous parlez un peu anglais et que vous aimez des series un peu loufoques et avec leur univers totalement unique, vous rentrerez dans une histoire passionnante qui vaut le détour. je ne peux que le recommander.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice
Interesting novel, it's self contained so you get a full conclusion by the end of the book though it leaves you wanting more
